The unusual constr. c. gen, = ";obey"; one in authority is found both in the papyri and in the inscrr., as in the marriage contracts P Tebt I. 104.14 (B.C. 92) ἔ ]στω δὲ Ἀπολλωνίαι π [α ]ρὰ Φιλίσκωι πειθαρχοῦσα α [ὐ ]τοῦ ὡς προσῆ [κό ]ν ἐστιν γυναῖκα ἀνδρός, ";Apollonia shall remain with Philiscus, obeying him as a wife should her husband"; (Edd.), P Oxy II. 265.13 (A.D. 81–95) ὅσ [α δ ]ε ̣ῖ πειθαρχεῖν γαμετὴν γυναῖκα ἀνδρός, and in Syll 2 (= .3 22).7 (B.C. 494) πυνθάνομαι σὲ τῶν ἐμῶν ἐπιταγμάτων οὐ κατὰ πάντα πειθαρχεῖν.
For πειθαρχέω c. dat., as in Acts 27:21 cf. P Oxy XII. 1411.16 (A.D. 260) εἰ μὴ πειθαρχήσιαν τῇδε τ [ῇ παρ ]αγγελίᾳ, and Magn 114.8 πειθαρχεῖν δὲ π [άν ]τως τοῖς ὑπὲρ τοῦ κοινῇ συμφέροντος ἐπιταττομένοις, and for the verb absolutely, as in Titus 3:1, cf. OGIS 483.70 (ii/A.D.) ἐὰν δὲ μηδ᾽ οὕτω πειθαρχῶσιν οἱ ἰδιῶται, ἔκδοσιν ποιείσθωσαν κτλ.
