Thayer's Expanded Definition

σπεύδω; imperfect ἔσπευδον; 1 aorist ἔσπευσα; (cognate with German sich sputen (cf. English speed, Latinstudeo; Vanicek, p. 1163; Fick 4:279)); from Homer down; the Sept. for מִהַר, also for בִּהֵל, etc.;

1. intransitive, (cf. Winers Grammar, § 38, 1; Buttmann, 130, 4), to hasten: as often in the Greek writings, followed by an infinitive Acts 20:16; ἦλθον σπεύσαντες, they came with haste, Luke 2:16; σπεύσας κατάβηθι (A. V. make haste and come down), κατέβη, Luke 19:5, 6; σπεῦσον καί ἔξελθε (A. V. make haste and get thee quickly out), Acts 22:18.

2. to desire earnestly: τί, 2 Peter 3:12; (Isaiah 16:5; examples from Greek authors are given by Passow, under the word, 2 vol. ii., p. 1501; (Liddell and Scott, under the word, II.)).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

";bring together,"; ";collect "; : cf. P Ryl II. 122.4 (A.D. 127) συνκομισάμενος τὰ πλεῖσ [τα μ ]έρη τῆς ἐκβάσεως τῶν ἐδαφῶν, ";having gathered the greater part of the produce of the fields"; (Edd.), P Tebt II. 591 (ii/iii A.D.) ἐγὼ γὰρ ἠ (l. εἰ) μὴ συνκομίσω τὸν χόρτον ἐν τρισὶ ἡμέραις οὐ δύναμε (l. –μαι) αὐτὰ καταλῖψαι, and P Flor II. 150.9 (A.D. 267) ὅταν γὰρ δεήσει τὰ παρά σοι θέρη συνκομισθῆναι πλείονα ἕξει βοηθεῖν σε.

Souter (Lex. s.v.) suggests that in Acts 8:2 the verb may mean, not ";take up"; for burial (see Field Notes, p. 116 f.) but ";get back,"; ";recover";; cf. the use of the mid. in such passages as BGU II. 530.26 (i/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 62) μόνον διαγράφω τὰ δημόσια μηδὲν συνκομιζόμεν ̣ο ̣ς ̣, ";only I continue paying the public taxes without getting back anything in return,"; and P Flor I. 58.5 (iii/A.D.) τοὺς φόρους συνκομιζομένη : see also Job 5:26 ὥσπερ θιμωνιὰ ἅλωνος καθ᾽ ὥραν συνκομισθεῖσα.

For the subst. συνκομιδή cf. P Cairo Zen I. 59049.3 (see the editor’s note), P Fay 135.3 (iv/A.D.) τοῦ καιροῦ καλέσαντος τῆς συγκομιδῆς, ";as the season requires the gathering"; (Edd.), and P Lond 1001.14 (A.D. 539) (= III. p. 271) καιρα συγκομιδῆς [κα ]ρ ̣π [ ]γ.
