= ";ploughing"; may be illustrated from the contract P Lond V. 1796.7 (vi/A.D.), when the ploughing just proceeding is exempted from the contract—ἐκτὸς τοῦ νῦν σχ [ί ]σμ ̣α ̣τ ̣ος τοῦ καὶ ὄντος. For σχίζα, ";a splinter of wood,"; cf. P Cairo Zen II. 59191.5 (B.C. 255) συ ]ν ̣α [πόσ ]τε ̣[ι ]λον δὲ καὶ σχίζας ὅτι πλ [ε ]ι ̣στας, ";send as large a supply of firewood as possible,"; and for a curious wordplay with σχῖνος see the note ad Sus. 54 in Charles Apocrypha i. p. 650.
