Thayer's Expanded Definition

τάχειον, WH for τάχιον (which see; and cf. under the word εἰ, .) ταχέως (ταχύς), adverb (from Homer down), quickly, shortly: Luke 14:21; Luke 16:6; John 11:31; 1 Corinthians 4:19; Galatians 1:6; Philippians 2:19, 24; 2 Timothy 4:9; with the added suggestion of inconsiderateness (hastily): 2 Thessalonians 2:2; 1 Timothy 5:22.

STRONGS NT 5032: τάχιον τάχιον (WH τάχειον; see their Appendix, p. 154 and cf. εἰ, ) (neuter of the comparitive ταχίων), adverb, for which the more ancient writers used θᾶσσον or θᾶττον, see Lob. ad Phryn., p. 76f; Winers Grammar, § 11, 2a.; (Buttmann, 27 (24)); more swiftly, more quickly: in comparison, John 20:4 (cf. Winers Grammar, 604 (562)); with the suppression of the second member of the comparison (Winer's Grammar, 243 (228)): Hebrews 13:19 (sooner, namely, than would be the case without your prayers for me),23 (namely, than I depart); John 13:27 (namely, than you seem to have resolved to); 1 Timothy 3:14 R G T (namely, than I anticipated).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

(1) ";a table,"; lit. ";four-footed (table)"; : P Eleph 5.12 (B.C. 284–3) τράπεζα α ̄, PSI IV. 39140 (B.C. 242–1) τράπεζαν πυξίνην, ";a table made of box-wood,"; Chrest. I. 11Aiii. 58 (B.C. 123) καὶ τούτων. . . συνκ ̣ωθωνισθέντων καὶ ἁλὸς [ἐπ ]ὶ τραπέζης μεταξ ̣υ ̣̣ ὄντων (l. ὄντος), and P Lond 46.205 (iv/A.D.) (= I. p. 71) ἐπὶ παπυρίνης τραπέζης.

(2) From the ";table"; at which the money-changers sat, τράπεζα came to mean ";a bank,"; as in Matthew 21:12, Luke 19:23 al.; P Eleph 27.23 (iii/B.C.) τετάγμεθα τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τοὺς τόκους ἐπὶ τὴν βασιλικὴν τράπεζαν, P Tebt II. 280.2 (B.C. 126) πέ (πτωκεν) ἐπὶ τὴν ἐν Κρο (κοδείλων) πό (λει) τρά (πεζαν) Ἡρακλείδει τρα (πεζίτῃ) ὥστε βασιλεῖ παρὰ Σοκονώπιος. . . τέ (λος) τόπου ψιλ (οῦ) τοῦ ὄντος ἐν Τεβτύ (νει), ";Sokonopis has paid into the bank at Crocodilopolis to Heraclides the banker for the King the tax upon a vacant space situated at Tebtunis"; (Edd.), ib. 483 (A.D. 94) acknowledgment of a loan paid διὰ τὴς Ἀφροδισίου τραπέζης Φανη [σί ]ου, and P Tebt II. 294.17 (A.D. 146) ἃς (δραχμὰς) κ [αὶ ] διαγράψω κυρωθεὶς ἐπὶ τὴν ἐπὶ τόπων δημοσίαν τράπεζαν τοῖς συνήθεσι προθεσμίαις,"; which (drachmae) I will, as soon as my appointment is ratified, pay into the local public bank at the accustomed dates"; (Edd.). In P Fay 96.4 (A.D. 122) a receipt is issued διὰ τῆς Σαραπίωνος τραπέζης stating that a certain payment had been made. As the payment was not in money but in kind ( ";oil";), this has led to the conjecture by Preisigke (Girowesen, p. 222 that the τράπεζα may not have been an ordinary bank but a revenue-office (see Wilcken’s note ad l. Chrest. I.P.372).

(3) For τράπεζα = ";nether-stone"; of a mill, see P Ryl II. 167.12 (A.D. 39) μυλαῖον ἐνεργὸν ἐν ᾧ μύλοι Θηβαικοὶ τρεῖς σὺν κώπαις καὶ τραπέζαις, ";a mill in full working order, containing 3 Theban mill-stones, with handles and nether-stones,"; and the other exx. collected by the editors ad 1. In the Christian P Grenf II. 111.10 (v/vi A.D.) (= Chrest. I. p. 161) τράπεζ (α) μαρμαρ () , τράπεζα refers to ";the slab of the altar which was supported by the τρίπους (line II)"; : see the editors’ note. MGr τραπέζι, ";table";; τράπεζα, ";altar-table"; : see Thumb Handb. p. 358 f.
