lift high, raise up, Batr. 81, APl. 4.41 (Agath.): — Med., τάφον ὑψώσαντο AP 7.55 (Alc.): — Pass., μάκελλος ἐκ θεμελίων ὑψοῦτο IG 5(2).268.45 (Mantinea, i B. C.).
II metaph., elevate, exalt, opp. ταπεινόω, LXX Exodus 15:2, al., Plb. 5.26.12, Matthew 23:12, al.; πονοῦντα τὸν ἴδιον ὑψῶσαι βίον [ Men. ] ap. Clem.Al. Strom. 5.14.120: — Pass., to be exalted, μὴ ὑψωθῇς τῇ καρδίᾳ LXX De. 8.14; τὰ χθαμαλὰ ὑψοῦται Plu. 2.103e; ὑ. κάλλεϊ AP 5.91 (Rufin.); ἐκ ποδὸς ὑψεύμενοι, of suddenly exalted persons, Hp. Praec. 7.

Metaph., to exalt, uplift: Acts 2:33; Acts 5:31, 2 Corinthians 11:7, James 4:10, 1 Peter 5:6; opp. to ταπεινῶ , Luke 1:52; ἑαυτόν , Matthew 23:12, Luke 4:11; Luke 18:14 (cf. ὑπερ -υψόω ).†
