1. senseless, of statues, X. Mem. 1.4.4: — and so, crazed, frantic, ἄφρονα κούρην Il. 5.875, cf. 761, A. Eu. 377 (lyr.); silly, foolish, Il. 3.220, Hes. Op. [210], S. El. 941, etc.; φρένας ἄ. Il. 4.104; τὸ ἄ., = cross ἀφροσύνη, Th. 5.105, X. Mem. 1.2.55; τῶ φρονίμῳ τῆς γνώμης παύοντες τὸ ἄ. [τῆς ῥώμης ] Gorg. Fr. 6; ἐξ ἄφρονος σώφρων γεγένηται X. Cyr. 3.1.17: Comp. -έστερος Pl. ἄφρων, ἀφρωνος, ὁ, ἡ, Ἄφρον, τό (from the alpha privative and φρήν, cf. εὔφρων, σώφρων) (from Homer down), properly, without reason ((εἴδωλα, Xenophon, mem. 1, 4, 4); of beasts, ibid. 1, 4, 14), senseless, foolish, stupid; without refection or intelligence, acting rashly: Luke 11:40; Luke 12:20; Romans 2:20; 1 Corinthians 15:36; 2 Corinthians 11:16, 19 (opposed to φρόνιμος, as in Proverbs 11:29); 2 Corinthians 12:6, 11; Ephesians 5:17 (opposed to συνιέντες); 1 Peter 2:15. (A strong term; cf. Schmidt, chapter 147 § 17.)

MM, s.v.): Luke 11:40; Luke 12:20, Romans 2:20, 1 Corinthians 15:36, 2 Corinthians 11:16; 2 Corinthians 12:6; 2 Corinthians 12:11, 1 Peter 2:15; opp. to φρόνιμος , 2 Corinthians 11:19; to συνιέντες , Ephesians 2:17.†

P Fay 124.12 (ii/A.D.) πάνυ γάρ μοι δοκεῖς ἄφρων τις εἶ [ν ]αι , ";indeed you appear to me to be quite mad"; (Edd.)—a remonstrance addressed to a man who was defrauding his mother of some allowance. The adj. occurs in the literary P Grenf I. 1.19 (ii/B.C.) ἐὰν δ᾽ ἑνὶ προσκαθεῖ μόνον , ἄφρων ἔσει : see note.
