Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

גָּרַס to break in pieces by scraping, rubbing, and generally to crush, especially into largish pieces (comp. דָּכַךְ, דָּכָא). So Syr. ܓܪܰܣ, Arab. جرش, compare Heb. עָרַס, whence עֲרִיסָה meal, Gries, Grüße. In the Old Testament once intrans. Psalms 119:20, גָּֽרְסָה נַפְשִׁי לְתַאֲבָה “my soul is crushed for longing.”

Hiphil, to crush, to break in pieces; Lamentations 3:16, וַיַּנְרֵס בֶּחָצָץ שִׁנַּי “and he has broken my teeth with gravel,” figuratively for a condition very calamitous and unhappy. See below גֶּרֶשׂ.
