כָּנָף f.

(1)  a wing, so called from its covering. בַּעַל כָּנָף Proverbs 1:17, and בַּעַל הַכְּנָפַיִם Ecclesiastes 10:20, that which has a wing, poet. used of a bird. כָּל־כָּנָף allerleh Geflügel, birds of all kinds, Genesis 7:14. Poet. there are used, כַּנְפֵי רוּחַ the wings of the wind, Psalms 18:11, 104:3 כַּנְפֵי שַׁחַר the wings of the morning, 139:9 on account of the rapidity of the moving on of the winds and the morning. Often also used metaph. of care and protection. Psalms 17:8, בְּצֵל כְּנָפֶיךָ תַּםְתִּירֵנִי “hide me under the shadow of thy wings.” Psalms 36:8, 57:2 61:5 63:8 91:4 Ruth 2:12. (Compare Arab. جنح, جناح and كنف Schult. on Job, 472; Gr. πτέρυξ, Grot. on Matthew 23:37.) Wings are also spoken of as applied to armies (as in Latin) [and English], Isaiah 8:8 comp. אֲנַפִּים.

(2) edge, extremity

(a) of a garment, the skirt, πτέρυξ, πτερύγιον; fully כְּנַף הַמְּעִיל the skirts of a mantle, 1 Samuel 24:5, 12 1 Samuel 24:12; Numbers 15:38; Deuteronomy 22:12 also without the name of the garment, Zechariah 8:23, כְּנַף אִישׁ יְהוּדִי “the skirt (of a mantle) of a man who is a Jew.” Ezekiel 5:3; Haggai 2:12. From the Orientals having been accustomed at night to wrap themselves in their mantles, this expression is used for the edge of a bed covering. Deuteronomy 23:1, וְלֹא יְנַלֶּה כְּנַף אָבִיו “neither shall he uncover his father’s coverlet;” i.e. he shall not violate his father’s bed. Deuteronomy 27:20 comp. Ezekiel 16:8. Ruth 3:9, “spread thy coverlet over thy handmaid;” i.e. take me to thy couch as thy wife. (Comp. Theoc. Idyll. xviii. 19, and ἐπισκιάζειν, Luke 1:35 [?]).

(b) the extremities of the earth (just as the inhabited earth is often compared to a cloak spread out). Isaiah 24:16, כְּנַף הָאָרֶץ “the extremity of the earth.” Especially in pl. Job 37:3, 38:13, כַּנְפוֹת הָאָרֶץ “the extremities of the earth;” and Isaiah 11:12. Ezekiel 7:2, אַדְבַּעַת כַּנְפוֹת הָאָרֶץ “the four quarters,” or “extreme bounds of the earth.”

(c) the highest summit of the temple, Daniel 9:27 comp. πτερύγιον τοῦ ἱεροῦ, Matthew 4:5.

Dual כְּנָפַיִם const. כַּנְפֵי fem. pr. a pair of wings; hence often used for the pl. שֵׁשׁ כְּנָפַיִם six wings, Isaiah 6:2 אַדְבַּע כְּנָפַיִם four wings, Ezekiel 1:6, 10:21. Pl. const. כַּנְפוֹת m. used of the skirts of a garment, Deuteronomy 22:12 and of the extremity of the earth (see No. 2, a, b).
