מָשַׁח fut. יִמְשַׁח inf. מְשֹׁחַ, once מָשְׁחָה Exodus 29:29 properly, to stroke, to draw the hand over any thing, mit der Hand ftreichen. (Arab. مَسَحَ id. Kindred are מָשַׁשׁ and מָחָה No. I, which see.) Hence
(1) to spread over with any thing, specially to lay colours on any thing (followed by בְּ of the colour), Jeremiah 22:14 especially to anoint with oil (Arabic مسح id.), e.g. cakes, Exodus 29:2 Levit. 2:4 7:12 a shield (by doing which, the leather becomes more tenacious, and less pervious to weapons), Isaiah 21:5; 2 Samuel 1:21 [adj.], etc. Especially to anoint any one as a sacred rite in his inauguration and consecration to an office, as a priest, Exodus 28:41, 40:15 a prophet, 1 Kings 19:16; Isaiah 61:1 a king, 1 Samuel 10:1, 15:1 2 Samuel 2:4; 1 Kings 1:34 also a stone or pillar, which should be, at some future time, a sacred place, Genesis 31:13 also vessels consecrated to God, Exodus 40:9, 11 Exodus 40:11; Leviticus 8:11; Numbers 7:1. Fully expressed, מָשָׁח פּ׳ לְמֶלֶךְ to anoint, i.e. to consecrate any one king, 1 Kings 19:15; 2 Kings 9:3 and concisely 2 Samuel 19:11, “Absalom אֲשֶׁר מָשַׁחְנוּ עָלֵינוּ whom we anointed, (i.e. made king) over us.” Isaiah 61:1, “because Jehovah hovah hath anointed me, (i.e. consecrated, appointed), לְבַשֵּׂר to preach”. The thing (oil or ointment) with which the anointing is performed, is put with בְּ prefixed, Exodus 29:2; Psalms 89:21 and in the acc., Psalms 45:8; Amos 6:6.
(2) [“to spread out, to expand, hence”], to measure, Syr. ܡܫܰܚ, Arab. مسح Hence מִשְׁחָה, מָשְׁחָה and מִמְשַׁח.
