ἑξῆς, adverb (from ἔχω, future ἕξω; cf. έ᾿χομαι τίνος to cleave to, come next to, a thing), successively, in order, (from Homer down); ὁ, ἡ, τό ἑξῆς, the next following, the next in succession: so ἡ ἑξῆς ἡμέρα, Luke 9:37; elliptically ἐν τῇ ἑξῆς, namely, ἡμέρα, Luke 7:11 (here WH text Tr text L marginal reading ἐν τῷ ἑξῆς namely, χρόνῳ, soon afterward); τῇ ἑξῆς, namely, ἡμέρα, Acts 21:1; Acts 25:17; Acts 27:18.

For this word in reference to time, as in all its NT occurrences, cf. P Oxy II. 257.27 (A.D. 94–5) τοῦ ἑξῆς η ̄ (ἔτους), ";of the following 8th year,"; ib. VII. 1035.8 (A.D. 143) τοῦ ἑξῆς μηνὸς Φαμενώθ, ";of the next month Phamenoth,"; and the elliptical usage, as in Acts 21:1 al., in ib. 1063.6 (ii/iii A.D.) τῇ εξῆς (sc. ἡμέρᾳ) following a preceding σήμερ ̣ον. With the v.l. ἐν τῷ ἑξῆς (probably = ἐν τῷ ἑξῆς χρόνῳ) ";soon afterwards"; (RV), in Luke 7:11 cf. the MGr στὸ ἑξῆς, ";for the future,"; which Thumb (Handbook, p. 328) quotes from Aegina. In P Hamb I. 12.1 (A.D. 209–10) the heading ἡ ἐπίσκεψις ἑξῆς δηλοῦται = ";the revision is carried on further in this column,"; and in .21 the same words = ";the revision is carried on further in the following column"; : see p. 46. The thought of ";in order,"; ";suitably,"; appears in such passages as P Par 26.48 (B.C. 163–2) (= Selections, p. 18) ἵνα, πᾶν τὸ ἑξῆς ἔχουσαι, πολλῷ μᾶλλον τὰ νομιζόμενα. . . ἐπιτελῶμεν, ";that, when we have everything in order, we may be much better able to perform our regular duties,"; P Oxy II. 282.7 (A.D. 30–35) ἐ ]γὼ μὲν οὖν ἐπεχορήγησα αὐτῇ τὰ ἑξῆς καὶ ὑπὲρ δύναμιν, ";I for my part provided for her what was suitable and indeed beyond my resources"; : cf. P Tebt II. 319.34 (A.D. 248) where an agreement regarding the division of property after the enumeration of certain particulars concludes—καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς, ";and so on,"; indicating, as the editors point out, that the document is a copy of the original, breaking off at the immediately preceding word, and omitting the concluding formula.
