a. properly, of tarrying in a place: ἐν Ἐφέσῳ, 1 Corinthians 16:8; ἐν τῇ σαρκί, to live still longer on earth Philippians 1:24 (G T WH omit ἐν); αὐτοῦ, there, Acts 15:34 (Rec.); (Lachmann αὐτοῖς); with the dative of thing: τῇ σαρκί, to abide as it were a captive to life on earth, Philippians 1:24 G T WH; ἐπί τίνι, with one, Acts 28:14 (L T Tr WH παῥ); πρός τινα, with one, 1 Corinthians 16:7; Galatians 1:18; with specification of time how long: Acts 10:48; Acts 21:4, 10; Acts 28:12, 14; 1 Corinthians 16:7.

b. tropically, to persevere, continue; with the dative of the thing continued in (cf. For . ";remain"; in a place, as in Acts 10:48, 1 Corinthians 16:7 f., cf. P Lond 897.12 (A.D. 84) (= III. p. 207) κέκρικα γὰρ νὴ τοὺς θεοὺς ἐν Ἀλεξανδρε ̣ίᾳ ἐπιμένειν, P Fay 296 (A.D. 113) πρὸς τὸ δύνασθαί με ἐπιμένιν ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ διευθύνων τὰ δημόσια. The construction with the dative is found in P Ryl II. 153.3 (A.D. 138–61) τῷ αὐ ]τ ̣ῷ ἀπελευθέ [ρῳ ] . . . ῳ ἐπιμ ̣[ ]νοντι ὡς προγέγραπται τῇ πατρίδι μου : cf. ib. 239.9 (mid. iii/A.D.) ἐπίμινον τοῖς ἐκεῖ, ";stay on for the men there,"; PSI III. 158.26 (iii/A.D. ?) a planetary configuration makes men ἐπιψόγους μ ̣ὴ ἐπιμένοντας μιᾷ γυναικί (the opposite of ";love one only and cleave to her.";). For the tropical use, as in Romans 6:1, cf. P Oxy II. 237vi. 18 (A.D. 186) ἐπιμένει τῇ αὐτῇ ἀπονοίᾳ ἐνυβρίζων μοι, P Tebt II. 424.4 (late iii/A.D.) εἰ μὲν ἐπιμένις σου τῇ ἀπονοίᾳ, συνχέρω σοι, ";if you persist in your folly, I congratulate you"; (Edd.), and with [Jn] 8.7 ἐπέμενον ἐρωτῶντες cf. the late P Oxy I. 128.7 (vi/vii A.D.) ἐπιμένει γὰρ λέγων μὴ δύνασθαι ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον κοπωθῆναι, ";he insists that he is unable to bear such a strain"; (Edd.). See also Menandrea p. 3.35 ἐπιμένει τὸ χρέος ἀπεργαζόμενος, ";he stays on to work off the debt.";
