καθότι (i. e. καθ' ὁ τί), according to what, i. e.

1. so far as, according as: Acts 2:45; Acts 4:35 (Polybius 18, 19 (36), 5; for כַּאֲשֶׁר, Exodus 1:12, 17))

2. because that, because (cf. Winer's Grammar, § 53, 8): Luke 1:7; Luke 19:9; Acts 2:24, and L T Tr WH (for Rcc. διότι) in Acts 17:31 (Tobit 1:12 Tobit 13:4; Polybius 18, 21 (38),6).

3. as, just as: Baruch 6 (Epistle Jer.) ; Judith 2:13, 15 Judith 10:9, and often in Thucydides, et al.

For this word, which is peculiar to Luke in the NT, we may cite P Hib I. 66.3 (B.C. 228) καθότι ὑμῖν καὶ Ἀσκληπιάδης γέγραφεν, P Amh I I . 49.3 (B.C. 108) καθότι πρόκειται, P Tebt II. 386.23 (B.C. 12) καθότι προγέγραπται, etc. The meaning ";as,"; ";just as,"; is seen in P Eleph 24.8 (iii/B.C.) καθότι ἂν ἡμῖν ἐπιδείξωσιν οἱ βασιλικοὶ γραμματεῖς, P Ryl II. 154.19 (contract of marriage—A.D. 66) καθότι π ̣[ρότ ]ε ̣ρ ̣ο ̣ν ̣ [συ ]νεβίουν, P Oxy XII. 1473.16 (A.D. 201) καθότι πρὸς ἀλλήλους συνεχώρησαν, Michel 534.28 (iii/B.C. ad init.) καθότι ἂν δοκεῖ αὐτοῖς. For the iterative force of ἄν in this last ex. cf. Acts 2:45 : practically the same phrase, though now with the subjunctive, is found in PSI IV. 415.9 (iii/B.C.) καθ᾽ ὅ τι ἄν σου τυγχάνηι [χρ ]εία [ν ] ἔχων.
