καταχθόνιος, καταχτονιον (κατά (see κατά, III. 3), χθών (the earth)), subterranean, Vulg. infernus: plural, of those who dwell in the world below, i. e. departed souls (cf. Winers Grammar, § 34, 2; but others make the adjective a neuter used indefinitely; see Lightfoot, in the place cited), Philippians 2:10. (Homer, Dionysius Halicarnassus, Anthol., etc., Inscriptions)

OGIS 382.1 (ii/A.D.)—an inscr. in which Aurelius Pacorus, King of Armenia, announces θ (εοῖς) κ (αταχθονίοις) that he has purchased a sarcophagus for his brother. Cf. such common formulae as CIG III. 4252b.7 ἁμαρτ ]ωλὸς ἒστ [ω θεοῖς κατα ]χθονίοις, 4253.22 ἔστω ἱερόσυλος [θ ]εοῖς οὐ [ρ ]ανίοις καὶ καταχθονίοις, and the mention of ἄγγελοι καταχθόνιοι for the older ἀμφίπολοι χθόνιοι in Audollent 74.1 al.
