יָטַב i.q. טוֹב, only used in the fut. יִיטַב, יִטַב (once תֵּיטְבִי Nahum 3:8 in pret. use is made of the verb טוֹב).

(1) to be good, Nahum 3:8. Mostly used impers.

(a) יִיטַב לִי “it will be well for me.” Genesis 12:13, 40:14 Deuteronomy 4:40.

(b) וַיִּיטַב בְּעֵינַי “it was good in my eyes,” i.e. “I was pleased.” Genesis 41:37, 45:16 Leviticus 10:19, 20 Leviticus 10:20 more rarely followed by לִפְנֵי Esther 5:14; Nehemiah 2:5, followed by לְ Psalms 69:32.

(2) to be merry, joyful, of the mind (לֵב). Judges 19:16; Ruth 3:7; Ecclesiastes 7:3.

Hiphil הֵיטִיב fut. יֵיטִיב, once יֵיטִיב.

(1) to do well, or rightly (any things which have been done), Deuteronomy 5:25, הֵיטִיבוּ כָּל־אֲשֶׁר דִּבֵּרוּ “they have done well (as to) whatever they have said,” i.e. they have well spoken. Deuteronomy 18:17. Followed by a gerund. Jeremiah 1:12, הֵיטַבְתָּ לִרְאוֹת “thou hast seen rightly.” 1 Samuel 16:17, מֵיטִיב לְנַגֵּן “who can play well,” i.e. skilfully; without לְ poetically Isaiah 23:16. Inf. absol. הֵיטֵב in doing well, or rightly, adv. well, accurately, fitly. Deuteronomy 9:21, 13:15 17:4 19:18 27:8. הֵיטִיב דְּרָכָיו Jeremiah 2:33, 7:3, ה׳ מַעֲלָלִים Jeremiah 35:15, to act, or live, well, or honestly, without accus. elliptically, Jerem. 4:22, וּלְהֵיטִיב לֹא יָדָֽעוּ “they know not to do well.” Jeremiah 13:23. Inf. adv. honestly, rightly. Jonah 4:9.

(2) to do good to any one, followed by a dat. Genesis 12:16; Exodus 1:20 followed by an acc. Deuteronomy 8:16, 30:5 followed by עִם Genesis 32:10, 13 Genesis 32:13; Numbers 10:32.

(3) to make merry, Judges 19:22.

(4) to fit, to adjust (to trim), Germ. zurechtmachen (Syr. ܛܰܝܶܒ), as lamps, Exodus 30:7 to adorn the head, i.e. to put the locks in order, 2 Kings 9:30.

(5) intrans. to be good, Micah 2:7 hence followed by אֶל to please, as in Kal, 1 Samuel 20:13.

Hence מֵיטָב [and יָטְבָתָה].
