Then Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen, went forward and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"

So he asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus from Nazareth."Jesus the Nazarene; the Gk. Nazoraios may be a word play between Heb. netser, meaning branch (see Isaiah 11:1), and the name">[fn]

Jesus replied, "I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."

First they brought him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.Matthew 26:57; Luke 3:2;">[xr]

Caiaphas was the person who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one man die for the people.John 11:50;">[xr]

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters.to the praetorium">[fn] It was early in the morning, and the Jewsthey">[fn] did not go into the headquarters for fear that they might become unclean and be unable to eat the Passover meal.Matthew 27:2; Mark 15:1; Luke 23:1; Acts 3:13; 10:28; 11:3;">[xr]

Pilate told them, "You take him and try him according to your law." The Jews said to him, "It is not legal for us to put anyone to death."

Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my servants would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.[fn] But for now my kingdom is not from here."Daniel 2:44; 7:14; Luke 12:14; John 6:15; 8:15; 1 Timothy 6:13;">[xr]

Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. I was born for this, and I came into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."John 8:47; 1 John 3:19; 4:6;">[xr]

Pilate said to him, "What is 'truth'?" After he said this, he went out to the Jews[fn] again and told them, "I find no basis for a charge against him.Matthew 27:24; Luke 23:4; John 19:4,6;">[xr]

But you have a custom that I release one person for you at Passover. Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?"Matthew 27:15; Mark 15:6; Luke 23:17;">[xr]

Pilate went outside again and told the Jews,them">[fn] "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him."John 18:6,38;">[xr]

When the high priests and the officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate told them, "You take him and crucify him. I find no basis for a charge against him."Acts 3:13;">[xr]

Now it was the Preparation Day for the Passover, about twelve noon.the sixth hour">[fn] He said to the Jews, "Here is your king!"Matthew 27:62;">[xr]

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier, and took his cloakand his tunic">[fn] as well. The cloak was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down.Matthew 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34;">[xr]

So they said to each other, "Let's not tear it. Instead, let's throw dice to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture that says,Psalm 22:18;">[xr] "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they threw dice."Psalm 22:18">[fn] So that is what the soldiers did.

Since it was the Preparation Day, the Jews did not want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath, for that was a particularly important Sabbath. So they asked Pilate to have the men's legs broken and the bodiesthe bodies">[fn] removed.Deuteronomy 21:23; Mark 15:42; John 19:42;">[xr]

For these things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "None of his bones will be broken."Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20">[fn]Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20;">[xr]

For they did not yet understand the Scripture that saidthat said">[fn] that he had to rise from the dead.Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:25-31; 13:34-35;">[xr]

Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."
