Contextual Overview

31 Y'hoshafat ruled over Y'hudah; he was thirty-five years old when he began his reign, and he ruled twenty-five years in Yerushalayim. His mother's name was ‘Azuvah the daughter of Shilchi. 32 He lived in the manner of Asa his father and did not turn away from it, doing what was right from Adonai 's perspective; 33 although the high places were not taken away, and the people had not yet set their hearts toward the God of their ancestors. 34 Other activities of Y'hoshafat, from beginning to end, are written in the records of Yehu the son of Hanani, which have been inserted in the Annals of the Kings of Isra'el. 35 It was after this that Y'hoshafat joined up with Achazyah king of Isra'el, who was acting very wickedly. 36 He joined together with him to build large ships capable of going to Tarshish; they made the ships in ‘Etzyon-Gever. 37 Then Eli‘ezer the son of Dodavahu from Mareshah prophesied against Y'hoshafat: "Because you joined yourself with Achazyah, Adonai is wrecking your project." And the ships were wrecked, so that they couldn't go to Tarshish.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last,.... Those that were done at the beginning, and those that were done at the latter end of his reign:

behold, they are written in the book of Jehu, the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel; see 1 Kings 16:1, the same that reproved Jehoshaphat, 2 Chronicles 19:2. He wrote a book of his own times, and which was so much esteemed, according to Kimchi, that it was written with, or put along with, the book of the kings of Israel, for so he interprets the phrase; but the Targum understands it of Jehu being the king's historiographer, who had the care and oversight of the diary, journal, or annals of the kings of Israel.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Who is mentioned ... - Words which are now generally thought to mean “whose work was inserted into the Book of the Kings.”

Of Israel - “Israel” is probably used here inexactly for “Judah” (compare2 Chronicles 12:6; 2 Chronicles 12:6; 2 Chronicles 21:2, 2 Chronicles 21:4).

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 2 Chronicles 20:34. In the book of Jehu — This is totally lost, though it is evident that it was in being when the books of Chronicles were written.
