THE MESSAGE
But Jonathan answered, "Hardly! Our master King David has just made Solomon king! And the king has surrounded him with Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, with the Kerethites and Pelethites; and they've mounted Solomon on the royal mule. Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon and the parade is headed up this way singing—a great fanfare! The city is rocking! That's what you're hearing. Here's the crowning touch—Solomon is seated on the throne of the kingdom! And that's not all: The king's servants have come to give their blessing to our master King David saying, ‘God make Solomon's name even more honored than yours, and make his rule greater than yours!' On his deathbed the king worshiped God and prayed, ‘Blessed be God , Israel's God, who has provided a successor to my throne, and I've lived to see it!'"
New American Standard Bible (1995)
But Jonathan replied to Adonijah, "No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king.

Contextual Overview

41 As Adonijah and all his guests were finishing the feast, they heard the noise. And when Joab heard the trumpet, he asked, "What's the meaning of all that noise in the city?" 42 Before he finished speaking, Jonathan, the son of the priest Abiathar, arrived. "Come on in," Adonijah said. "You're a good man—you must be bringing good news." 43 "I'm afraid not," Jonathan answered. "His Majesty King David has made Solomon king. 44 He sent Zadok, Nathan, Benaiah, and the royal bodyguards to escort him. They had him ride on the king's mule, 45 and Zadok and Nathan anointed him as king at Gihon Spring. Then they went into the city, shouting for joy, and the people are now in an uproar. That's the noise you just heard. 46 Solomon is now the king. 47 What is more, the court officials went in to pay their respects to His Majesty King David and said, ‘May your God make Solomon even more famous than you, and may Solomon's reign be even more prosperous than yours.' Then King David bowed in worship on his bed 48 and prayed, ‘Let us praise the Lord , the God of Israel, who has today made one of my descendants succeed me as king, and has let me live to see it!'" 49 Then Adonijah's guests were afraid, and they all got up and left, each going his own way. 50 Adonijah, in great fear of Solomon, went to the Tent of the Lord 's presence and took hold of the corners of the altar.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, verily,.... Or, "nay, but" k it is not so as you imagine; it is not good tidings, but bad tidings to thee I bring:

our lord King David hath made Solomon king; of which he gives the following account in proof of it.

k אבל "nequaquam", V. L. Junius & Tremellius, Piscator.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Verily - “Nay, but” (or, “Not so”).

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Kings 1:43. Jonathan answered — He was properly a messenger about the court; we have met with him and Ahimaaz before, 2 Samuel 15:36. He had now been an observer, if not a spy, on all that was doing, and relates the transactions to Adonijah, in the very order in which they took place.

1. David has nominated Solomon his successor.

2. Zadok, Nathan, and Benaiah, have been appointed to set him on the king's mule.

3. They have taken him to Gihon, and anointed him there.

4. They have brought him up to Jerusalem and placed him on the throne of the kingdom.
