Contextual Overview

8 Eighteen years old, was Jehoiachin when he began to reign, and, three months, reigned he in Jerusalem, - and, his mother's name, was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan, of Jerusalem. 9 And he did the thing that was wicked in the eyes of Yahweh, - according to all that, his father, had done. 10 At that time, came up the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem, - and the city came into the siege. 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants were about to besiege it. 12 Then came out Jehoiachin king of Judah, unto the king of Babylon, he and his mother, and his servants, and his generals, and his courtiers, - and the king of Babylon took him, in the eighth year of his reign. 13 And he carried forth from thence, all the treasures of the house of Yahweh, and the treasures of the house of the king, - and he cut off all the fittings of gold, which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of Yahweh, according to all that, Yahweh, had spoken. 14 And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the generals, and all the mighty men of valour, ten thousand becoming captives, and all the artificers and the smiths, - none remained save the poorest of the people of the land. 15 And he carried away captive Jehoiachin, to Babylon, - and, the king's mother, and the king's wives, and his courtiers, and the nobles of the land, took he away captive, from Jerusalem to Babylon. 16 And, all the men of might - seven thousand, and artificers and smiths - a thousand, all who were valiant and ready to make war, the king of Babylon brought them captive to Babylon. 17 And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, his relative, king in his stead, - and changed his name to Zedekiah.

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

the king: 2 Chronicles 36:10, 2 Chronicles 36:11, Jeremiah 37:1, Jeremiah 52:1

his father's brother: He was son of Josiah, brother to Jehoiakim, and uncle of Jehoiachin. 1 Chronicles 3:15, 1 Chronicles 3:16, 2 Chronicles 36:10

changed: The change of name was to shew Nebuchadnezzar's supremacy, and that Zedekiah was only his vassal or viceroy. The custom of changing names, we are assured by travellers, still exists in the East. 2 Kings 23:34, 2 Chronicles 36:4

Reciprocal: 1 Chronicles 3:14 - Josiah Jeremiah 1:3 - unto the end Jeremiah 21:1 - when Ezekiel 17:5 - the seed Ezekiel 17:13 - hath taken Daniel 1:7 - gave names

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father's brother king in his stead,.... The third son of Josiah, 1 Chronicles 3:15

and changed his name to Zedekiah; for the same reason the king of Egypt changed the name of Eliakim, 2 Kings 23:34 to signify his subjection to him; though some think it was to put him in mind of the justice of God, as the name signifies, that would overtake him, should he be treacherous to him, and rebel against him; so the Jewish Midrash.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Mattaniah, son of Josiah and brother of Jehoahaz, but thirteen years his junior, adopted a name significant of the blessings promised by Jeremiah to the reign of a king whose name should be “Yahweh, our righteousness” Jeremiah 23:5-8.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 2 Kings 24:17. Made Mattaniah his father's brother king in his stead — He was the son of Josiah, and brother to Jehoiakim.

Changed his name to Zedekiah.2 Kings 23:34.
