THE MESSAGE
The soldiers took Jesus into the palace (called Praetorium) and called together the entire brigade. They dressed him up in purple and put a crown plaited from a thornbush on his head. Then they began their mockery: "Bravo, King of the Jews!" They banged on his head with a club, spit on him, and knelt down in mock worship. After they had had their fun, they took off the purple cape and put his own clothes back on him. Then they marched out to nail him to the cross.

Contextual Overview

15Pilate didn't want a riot on his hands, so he released Barabbas and sent Jesus to be whipped. After that, he would be strung up on the cross. 16The Roman soldiers led Jesus into the Governor's mansion and gathered everyone around. 17They put a purple cape on him and wove a crown of thorns that they smashed on his head. The blood ran into Jesus's eyes and down his face. 18They paraded mockingly in front of Jesus and saluted him saying, "All hail the Boss of the Jews!" 19They repeatedly hit him on the head, and spit on Jesus. They knelt down in fake homage and made fun of him for a long time. 20Finally, when they'd had their fill of fun, they stripped the purple cape off him and led him away to string him up on the cross. 21Jesus was carrying the cross piece he would be nailed to, but could go no further due to his injuries. The soldiers grabbed a guy named Simon and made him carry the cross piece.

Cross-References

1 Thessalonians 2:16
These Jews have parked themselves in front of the gate and try to prevent us from bringing the remnants into God's green pastures. But God isn't turning a blind eye or a deaf ear to what they are doing. He's just giving them enough rope to either hang themselves or tie hard and fast to the grace that is available to all.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the soldiers led him away into the hall,.... From the place called the pavement, where was the judge's bench, from which he passed sentence on Christ, to a large room,

called the praetorium, or judgment hall; being the hall, or room, where the praetor, or Roman magistrate, kept his court of judicature; and is the same place the Jews would not go into, lest they should be defiled, and become unmeet to eat the Chagigah that day; and into which Pilate had Jesus more than once alone,

John 18:28, but now he had a large company with him:

and they call together the whole band; very likely the soldiers, into whose custody Jesus was put, and who led him away, were the four soldiers that attended his crucifixion, and parted his garments; but for greater diversion they got together the whole band to which they belonged; John 18:28- :.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Called Praetorium - The hall of the “praetor,” or Roman governor, where he sat to administer justice.

Whole band - See the notes at Matthew 27:27.
