Contextual Overview

1 And it cometh to pass on the day of Moses' finishing setting up the tabernacle, that he anointeth it, and sanctifieth it, and all its vessels, and the altar, and all its vessels, and he anointeth them, and sanctifieth them, 2 and the princes of Israel (heads of the house of their fathers, they [are] princes of the tribes, they who are standing over those numbered) bring near, 3 yea, they bring their offering before Jehovah, six waggons covered, and twelve oxen -- a waggon for two of the princes, and an ox for one -- and they bring them near before the tabernacle. 4 And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying, 5 `Receive from them, and they have been to do the service of the tent of meeting, and thou hast given them unto the Levites, each according to his service.' 6 And Moses taketh the waggons and the oxen, and giveth them unto the Levites. 7 The two of the waggons and the four of the oxen he hath given to the sons of Gershon, according to their service, 8 and the four of the waggons and the eight of the oxen he hath given to the sons of Merari, according to their service, by the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest; 9 and to the sons of Kohath he hath not given, for the service of the sanctuary [is] on them: on the shoulder they bear.

Two wagons: Numbers 3:25, Numbers 3:26, Numbers 4:24-28

sons of Gershon: The Gershonites being fewest in number of able men, had the less burdensome things to carry; for they carried only the curtains, coverings, and hangings - Numbers 4:25, Numbers 4:40. And although this was a cumbersome carriage, and they needed waggons, yet it was not a heavy one, and they needed few.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon,.... The eldest son of Levi:

according to their service; which was to bear and take care of the curtains, coverings, hangings and rails of the tabernacle; and which, when carrying from place to place, it was proper they should be covered from being exposed to rain and dust; and being so many as they were, must be heavy, burdensome, and cumbersome, and therefore two wagons, with two yoke of oxen, were given them, to ease them.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

To the Gershonites, who had to transport the hangings and coverings of the tabernacle, two wagons are assigned: to the Merarites, who had the charge of the solid parts of the tabernacle, four wagons. The furniture and vessels the Kohathites were to carry on their own shoulders. Compare Numbers 3:25-26, Numbers 3:31, Numbers 3:36-37.
