1 Kings 11:5 — Ashtoreth. Compare Judges 2:13 . 1Sa 7:3 ; 1 Samuel 12:10 ; 1 Samuel 31:10 . Milcom. Same as Malcham, the Aramaic pronunciation of Molech (1 Kings 11:7 ). See Zephaniah 1:5 . Translated "their king" (Jeremiah 49:1 .Amos 1:15; Amos 1:15 ). abomination. The word used for an idol by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Effect), because of Jehovah's hatred which it produced. Compare 2 Kings 23:13 .Daniel 9:27 .
2 Kings 8:16 — Jehoshaphat being then king. Jehoram associated with him in Joram's filth year, and reigned solely in Joram's sixth year. Compare 2 Kings 9:29 . Joram (of Ahab) began in Jehoshaphat's eighteenth year (2 Kings 3:1 ). His fifth year is therefore Jehoshaphat's twenty-third year, when Jehoram is associated with him as king, in the third year before his death. See App-50 . began to reign: i.e. in consort with his father.
1 Chronicles 25:1 — captains of the host = the heads of the Temple service. This word "host" applied to Levites in Numbers 4:3 . Rendered "service" (margin warfare) in Numbers 4:23 , Numbers 4:30 , Numbers 4:35 , Numbers 4:39 , Numbers 4:43 ; Numbers 8:24 . Jeduthun. Probably another name for Ethan. See note on 1 Chronicles 16:41 . prophesy with harps. Not "perform", or "render". The music therefore eminently spiritual. See note on 1 Chronicles 25:5 .
2 Chronicles 29:24 — reconciliation = cleansing. atonement. See note on Exodus 29:33 . for all Israel. Note the reference to this in Hezekiah's "Songs of the degrees" (Psalms 133:0 , and Compare 2 Chronicles 30:1-3 , 2Ch 30:5 , 2 Chronicles 30:6 , 2 Chronicles 30:11 , 2 Chronicles 30:12 , 2 Chronicles 30:14 , 2 Chronicles 30:18 , 2 Chronicles 30:25 , 2 Chronicles 30:26 ). See note on 1 Kings 12:17 and App-67 .
2 Chronicles 36:9 — Jahoiachin. Called also Jeconiah (1 Chronicles 3:16 ) and Coniah (Jeremiah 22:24 , Jeremiah 22:28 ). Compare 2 Kings 24:8 . The "Je" (= Jehovah) being cut off from his name. eight years. Some codices, with Septuagint and Syriac, read "eight", but 2 Kings 24:8 reads "eighteen". The "eighteen" must include his co-regency, the "eight" to his reigning alone. This practice was common in Israel and Judah as well as in ancient contemporary kingdoms.
Ezra 4:2 — Zerubbabel. See note on Ezra 3:2 . chief = heads. we seek your God. A priest had been sent to these Samaritans (2 Kings 17:28-33 ). we do sacrifice unto Him. Hebrew text = "although we have not been sacrificing". Some codices, and two early printed editions, with Septuagint and Syriac, add "unto Him". Esar-haddon. The son and successor of Sennacherib (see notes on 2 Kings 19:37 , and 2 Chronicles 33:11 ). Assur = Assyria.
Ezra 4:7 — Artaxerxes = the great king. Used here of the Cyrus of Ezra 4:3 . See App-57 , and p. 618. Ezra 4:7-23 may also be retrospective of Nehemiah 2:20 Nehemiah 6:5 , companions = colleagues or associates. the Syrian tongue: i.e. in Aramaic characters as well as in the Aramaic language. Compare Esther 1:22 ; Esther 8:9 , where "writing" (Hebrew. kathab, to grave) is the same word as in this book.
Nehemiah 10:34 — the wood offering. Hebrew the offering of wood. Figure of speech Hypallage. App-6 . Not prescribed by the law. Josephus calls it Xylophory, or wood-bearing. A feast kept on the 22nd of Ab, and at other times. burn. Hebrew. ba'ar, to consume. Not yazath (as in Nehemiah 1:3 ; Nehemiah 2:17 ); or saraph (as in Nehemiah 4:2 . App-43 .) written in the law. See note on Exodus 17:14 , and App-47 .
Nehemiah 9:7 — choose Abram. Compare Genesis 11:31 ; Genesis 12:1 ; Genesis 17:5 .Joshua 24:1-3 . Abraham. See note on Genesis 17:5 , and App-50 . The letter ( He ) = five. This is the number of grace ( App-10 ), put into the middle of the names (Abram and Sarai), as a symbol of the grace that called him. See App-50 . for the repetition of five in its multiples all through his life.
Psalms 4:8 — and sleep = sleep at once. This reference is to 2 Samuel 17:2 . See note there. makest = wilt make. safety = confidence. To the chief Musician. See App-64 . upon Nehiloth; better, nehaloth = concerning inheritances. Referring to Jehovah ' s favour as being the true inheritance of godly Israelites, as shown in verses: Psalms 4:3 , Psalms 4:6 , Psalms 4:7 . Compare Psalms 144:12-15 , the other Nehaloth Psalm. See App-65 .
Numbers 21:6 — fiery serpents = burning. Hebrew. nacheshim saraphim. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Effect), App-6 , because the effect of the bite was a burning sensation. Hebrew. saraph (see App-43 .) The Seraphim so called in Isaiah 6:2 , because they were burning ones: hence the name for these serpents. In the same way nachash, shining one, is also used for serpents, because they are shining ones in appearance. See Genesis 3:1 , and compare App-19 .
Numbers 24:2 — according to their tribes. Compare Numbers 2:0 . the spirit of God (Hebrew. 'Elohim) . This expression occurs eight times outside the books of Samuel (Genesis 1:2 ; Genesis 41:38 . Exodus 31:3 ; Exodus 35:31 .Exodus 24:2 .Ezekiel 11:24 . 2 Chronicles 15:1 ; 2 Chronicles 24:20 ). In all other places it is "the spirit of Jehovah". Spirit. Hebrew. ruach. App-9 . upon. Always "upon "(not "in ") in Old Testament.
Numbers 34:7 — great sea: i.e. the Mediterranean, a modern name for the Great Sea. point out = mark out or claim. Hebrew. ta'ah. Occurs only here. mount Hor. Not the mount Hor where Aaron died, which was in the south corner of Edom (Numbers 33:37 , Numbers 33:38 ), but another, in the north, mount Hermon, a spur of the Lebanon (Joshua 13:5 ). Hermon had several names. Compare Deuteronomy 3:9 ; Deuteronomy 4:48 .
