Habakkuk 3:17
Although. Hebrew. ki, as in 2 Samuel 23:5 ; but must be understood not as being hypothetical, but as bringing out the antithesis with Habakkuk 3:18 (compare Job 8:7 ).
fig tree . . . vines . . . olive. See note on Judges 9:8-12 .
blossom. The edible fig, which is the blossom: i.e. the receptacle containing a large number of minute unisexual flowers growing to a succulent. The Hebrew text therefore and the Authorized Version rendering are both scientifically correct.
Zephaniah 1:3 consume. Note the Figure of speech Anaphora . Three times repeated.
man. Hebrew. 'adam with ' eth = humanity App-14 .
and. Note the Figure of speech Polysyndeton ( App-6 ), for emphasis.
stumblingblocks = ruin. Occurs only here, and Isaiah 3:6 . Figure of speech Metalepsis. "Stumblingblocks" put first for the idols and idolatry, and then idolatry put for the ruin brought about by them.
with = together with. Hebrew. 'eth .
the wicked = the lawless ones. Hebrew. rasha'. App-44 .
Zechariah 9:15
The Lord of hosts. See note on Zechariah 1:3 .
defend. See note on Isaiah 31:5 .
devour = devour [their enemies].
subdue with sling stones: or, trample on their weapons.
and. Some codices, with three early printed editions, read this "and" in the text.
make noise = shout.
wine. Hebrew. yayin . App-27 .
filled: i.e. filled [with wine] like.
as, &c. = as the sacrificial bowls [are filled with blood, which are tossed against] the corners (or horns) of the altar.
Matthew 22:32

the dead = dead people. See App-139 . (without the Article).
the living = living people. The only conclusion being that they must rise and live again in resurrection in order that He may be their God. This is what the Lord set out to prove (in Matthew 22:31 ) "concerning the resurrection". Greek. zao . See note on Matthew 9:18 .
Matthew 24:6
shall hear = will be about to hear.
see. Greek. horao. App-133 . Not the same word as in verses: Matthew 24:2 , Matthew 24:15 , Matthew 24:30 .
must = it is necessary [for them to].
come to pass = arise (as in Matthew 24:34 ).
the end. Greek. telos. Not the same as in Matthew 24:3 . This marks the beginning, not the end. The "many Christs" would be the very first sign. See note on 1 John 2:18 .
Matthew 28:19
Go ye, &c. See App-167 .
teach = disciple. Not the same word as in Matthew 28:20 .
nations = the nations.
baptizing . . . in. See App-115 Tr. and WI m. read "having baptized".
in = into. Denoting object and purpose. Compare Matthew 3:11 .Acts 2:38 .
the name. Singular. Not "names". This is the final definition of "the Name" of the One true God.

the Holy Ghost = the Holy Spirit. Greek. pneuma. See App-101 .
Matthew 6:27
of = from among. Greek. ek.
add = prolong.
cubit = span. Compare Luke 12:26 . Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), App-6 , for a very small thing, as in Psalms 39:5 , where the Greek pechus is used as the rendering of Hebrew. 'ammah.
stature. Used elsewhere of age in John 9:21 , John 9:23 .Hebrews 11:11 , and of stature in Luke 19:3 . Doubtful in Matthew 6:27 . Luke 2:52 .Ephesians 4:13 .
Matthew 7:29
taught = was continually teaching.
having authority: i.e. possessing Divine authority. Greek. exousia. App-172 . In the current Hebrew literature of that time it denoted the Hebrew mippi hagg burah = from the mouth of God. See notes on Matthew 26:64 .Mark 14:62 , and Hebrews 1:3 .
and not. Note the Figure of speech Pleonasm ( App-6 ). Jewish teachers always referred to tradition, or to what some other teacher had said; and do so to this day.

And, &c. Not "Luke's version" of "the Sermon on the Mount", but a repetition in a different form of certain parts of it on a subsequent occasion. Why create a "discrepancy "by supposing that our Lord never repeated any part of His discourses? Compare Isaiah 28:9-13 .
lifted up His eyes. Peculiar to Luke.
on = unto. Greek. eis. App-104 .
Blessed, &c. = Happy. See note on Matthew 5:3 .
the kingdom of God . See App-114 .
Luke 7:37
a woman. Not to be identified with Mary Magdalene: it is a libel on her to do so, and quite arbitrary. Compare Matthew 21:32 .
the city. That it was Magdala is a pure assumption.
which = who: i.e. reference to a class.
was, &c. All the texts read "which was in the city, a sinner".
when she knew = having got to know. Greek. ginosko. App-132 .

a supper . The first of the three suppers. It was on Saturday evening, at the close of the Sabbath, on the tenth day of Nisan. See App-157 .

served = was serving. Greek diakoneo. Occurs twenty- two times in the Gospels: thirteen times translated "minister" (Matthew 4:11 to Luke 8:3 ); nine times "serve" (Luke 10:40 to John 12:26 ). Compare Luke 10:40 . Same word as in Luke 22:27 .
John 15:13
no man = no one. Greek. oudeis.
a man = one. Greek. tis. App-123 .
lay down . Greek. tithemi, literally place; translated "giveth" in John 10:11 ; "lay down "in John 10:15 , John 10:17 , John 10:18 ; John 13:37 , John 13:38 ; 1 John 3:16 .

John 15:20
Remember . Referring to John 13:16 .
have persecuted = persecuted (Aor.) Greek. dioko = to pursue (opposite to pheugo, to flee), here with malignant intent. It is translated thirty-one times "persecute", and thirteen times "follow", &c. in a good sense. Compare Acts 9:4 . In Luke 11:49 and 1 Thessalonians 2:18 a stronger word, ekdioko, is used.

have kept = kept (Aor.)
saying. Greek logos. Same as "word" above, and in John 3:25 .
John 5:3

halt = lame. Eng. from Anglo-Saxon healt = stop, be-cause of having to stop frequently from lameness.
waiting . From this word to the end of John 5:4 is omitted by T Tr. A WH R, but not the Syriac (see App-94 . note 3). If it be an addition it must have been a marginal note to explain the "troubling "of John 5:7 , which gradually got into the text.
