I olive-oil, in Hom. mostly anointing-oil, used after the bath, λοεσσαμένω καὶ ἀλειψαμένω λίπ' ἐλαίῳ Il. 10.577, cf. 14.171, 18.350, etc.; before wrestling and other gymnastic exercises, πωλησεῦντι τὸ ἔ. εἰς τὸ γυμνάσιον IG 12(1).3 (Rhodes); ἔ. θεῖναι to provide oil at the baths, ib.4.597,606 (Argos): prov., πῦρ ἐλαίῳ κοιμίσαι Lyr.Alex.Adesp. 8 (a); ἐλαίῳ πῦρ κατας βεννύναι Luc. Tim. 44; εὐῶδες ἔ. Od. 2.339; ῥοδόεν (rose-scented) Il. 23.186; ἔ. ῥόδινον Hp. Mul. 2.135; ἔ. λευκον ib. 136; τοῦ λευκοτάτου πάντων ἐ. Σαμιακοῦ Antiph. 331.

For ἔ. = ";olive-oil,"; it is sufficient to cite P Par 43.4 (B.C. 154) καλῶς ποιήσεις ἀποστεῖλαί μοι ἡμίχουν ἐλαίου, P Oxy I. 91.14 (receipt of wages for nursing—A.D. 187) ὑπὲρ τροφείων καὶ ἐλαίου καὶ ἱματισμοῦ, P Grenf II. 77.36 (iii/iv A.D.) (= Selections, p. 122) where arrangements are made that a man conveying a dead body should be entertained ἐν ψωμίοις καὶ [οἰ ]ν ̣αρίῳ καὶ ἐλαίῳ, and the Christian letter P Heid 6.21 (iv/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 127) καταξίωσον δέξεσθαι τὸ μικρὸν ἐλέου διὰ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ ἡμῶν Μαγαρίου. The word is used = ";olive-tree"; in P Petr I. 29.7 (iii/B.C.) τὸ δὲ ἔλαιον δέδωκεν χοῦς ς ̄.
