    3. since by the rite of circumcision a man was separated from the unclean world and dedicated to God, the word is transferred to denote the extinguishing of lusts and the removal of sins

cut or clip round about, οἴνας περιταμνέμεν prune them, Hes. Op. 570; [ τὴν κεφαλὴν] π. κύκλῳ περὶ τὰ ὦτα Hdt. 4.64; of a goldsmith, CPR 22.6 (ii A. D.): Med., βραχίονας περιτάμνονται make incisions all over their arms, Hdt. 4.71: Pass., to be cut up, of fish, Arist. Mir. 835a19 .

2. of circumcision, τῶν ἐπιγινομένων οὐ περιτάμνουσι τὰ αἰδοῖα Hdt. 2.104, cf. D.C. 79.11; π. τοὺς παῖδας D.S. 1.28, cf. LXX John 5:2, al., PCair.Zen. 76.13 (iii B. C.), etc.: Med., περιτάμνονται τὰ αἰδοῖα Hdt. 2.36, 104, cf. D.S. 3.32; περιετέμοντο τὴν σάρκα LXX Genesis 34:24 : abs., practise circumcision, Hdt. 2.104: Pass., LXX Genesis 17:10,al.

II cut off and hem in all round: Med., βοῦς περιταμνόμενον cutting off cattle for oneself, 'lifling' cattle, Od. 11.402, 24.112: Pass., to be cut off, ἅρματα π. ὑπὸ τῶν ἱππέων X. Cyr. 5.4.8 .

to cut around (Hdt.), hence, to circumcise (Papyri τὰ αἰδοῖα , Hdt.) : Luke 1:59; Luke 2:21, John 7:22, Acts 7:8; Acts 15:5; Acts 16:3; Acts 21:21. Pass. and mid., to be circumcised, receive circumcision: Acts 15:1, 1 Corinthians 7:18, Galatians 2:3; Galatians 5:2-3; Galatians 6:12-13 Metaph. (cf. Deuteronomy 10:16, Jeremiah 4:4, al.), Colossians 2:11 (v. Deiss., BS, 151 f.; MM, xix).†

";whence"; : P Oxy II. 237viii. 33 (A.D. 186) δηλοῦντες πόθεν ἕκαστος τῶν ὑπαρχόντων καταβ ̣ε ̣βηκεν εἰς αὑτοὺς ἡ κτῆσ íε ýις, ";severally declaring the sources from which the property acquired has come into their possession"; (Edd.). For the enclitic ποθέν, cf. P Tebt II. 423.23 (early iii/A.D.) δή [λω ]σόν μοι ταχ ̣[έως ] ἵνα π ̣[έμ ]ψω π ̣ο ̣θ ̣ὲν αὐτοῖς μέτρ [α τινα, ";tell me at once in order that I may send a few measures to them from somewhere"; (Edd.), and for πόθεν = ";how,"; see Mark 12:37, John 1:48; John 6:5 (Field Notes, p. 91).
