The phrase εὖ or καλῶς ποιήσεις is very common introducing a command or request, almost = our ";please"; or ";kindly."; It is generally followed by an aor. part., as in 3 John 1:6, e.g. P Oxy II. 294.12 (A.D. 22) εὖ οὖν ποιήσις γράψας μοι ἀντιφώνη [σ ]ιν περὶ τούτων, ";please write me an answer on these matters,"; ib. 300.5 (late i/A.D.) περὶ οὗ καλῶς ποιήσεις ἀντιφωνήσασά μοι ὅτι ἐκομίσου, ";please send me an answer that you have received it,"; ib. III. 525.7 (early ii/A.D.) καλῶς ποιήσεις δοὺς λ ̣ω ̣[το ]υ ̣̑ παρὰ Σαραπίωνος ἐκ τοῦ ἐ [μοῦ ] λόγου, ";please get some lotus (?) for him from Sarapion at my expense"; (Edd.), ib. VI. 967 (ii/A.D.); but by the fut. ind. in ib. II. 297.3 (A.D. 54) καλῶς ποιήσεις γράψεις διὰ πιττακίων τὸν ἀπολογισμὸν τῶν [π ]ρ [ο ]βάτων, ";kindly write me in a note the record of the sheep"; (Edd.), ib. I. 113.6 (ii/A.D.) εὖ ποιήσεις ἀγοράσεις μοι (δραχμὰς) β ̄. In ib. VI. 929.6, .17 (ii/iii A.D.) καλῶς ποιήσεις is followed first by a part. ἀπαιτήσας, and then by ἀποκαταστῆσαι. The phrase μὴ ἄλλως ποιήσεις is used in cases of urgency as in the letter already quoted, ib. II. 294.14 (A.D. 22) μὴ οὖν ἄλλως ποιήσις, ἐγὼ δὲ αὐτὸς οὔπω οὐδὲ ἐνήλεπα (= ἐναλήλιφα sc. ἐμαυτὸν) ἕως ἀκούσω φάσιν παρὰ σοῦ περὶ ἁπάντων, ";be sure to do this; I am not so much as anointing myself until I hear word from you on each point"; (Edd.).
For the strong sense of ποιέω, ";am effective,"; as in the ";working"; of charms, cf. P Osl I. 1i. 1 (iv/A.D.) εἰς πάντα ποιῶν, with the editor’s note. In P Oxy XII. 1480.11 (A.D. 32) πεπόητε εἰς τὸν ἐκλογιστήν, instead of the editors’ rendering ";he has made it (a delay spoken of) as far as the eclogistes is concerned (?),"; Olsson (Papyrusbriefe, p. 75) thinks that ποιέω may be used for πράττω —";he has arranged it with the eclogistes.";
The phrase ποιεῖν μετά τινος, ";to act on someone’s behalf,"; is common in the LXX (Genesis 24:12 al.), but in the NT is confined to Luke (e.g. Luke 1:72; Luke 10:37, Acts 14:27). It is often regarded as a Hebraism (Blass Gr. p. 134, Souter Lex. s.v., but see Kühring, p. 35, Proleg. p. 106, Robertson Gr. p. 610 f.). The only instances we can quote from the papyri are late—BGU III. 948.8 (iv/A.D.) καλιοο ̣τερεν (l. καλλιότερον) . . . ἐποίησα μετὰ σοῦ, ib. 798.7 (Byz.) εἰς π ̣άντα τὰ καλὰ ἃ ἐποίησεν ̣ μετὰ τῶν δούλων αὐτῆς. The Latinism τὸ ἱκανὸν ποιεῖν (Mark 15:15) is illustrated s.v. ἱκανός.
For the meaning ";remain,"; ";abide,"; with an acc. of time as an adverbial addition, as in Acts 20:3, James 4:13, cf. PSI IV. 362.15 (B.C. 251–0) ὁρῶν με πλείους ἡμέρας ἐκεῖ ποιοῦντα, γράφει μοι εἰς Ἀλεξάνδρειαν, P Par 47.21 (c. B.C. 152–1) (= UPZ i. p. 332) δύο ἡμέρας ποιεῖ ἐν τῶι Ἀνυβιείωι πίνων, P Flor II. 137.7 (A.D. 263) προ ̣, ς ̣ τὴν μίαν ἡμέραν ἣν ̣ ποιεῖ ἐκεῖ, P Gen I. 54.19 (iv/A.D.) ἐποίησαμεν γὰρ τρῖς ἡμέρας ἐν τῇ Καρανίδι κοινώτεροι, and P Iand 14.6 (iv/A.D.) : see also Mayser Gr. II. i. p. 81.
The meaning ";celebrate,"; as in Matthew 26:18, Acts 18:21 D, Hebrews 11:28, is seen in P Fay 117.12 (A.D. 108) ἐπὶ (= εὶ) Ἔρα ̣σ ̣ο [ς ] τὰ Ἁρποχράτια ὧδε τάχα ι ̄δ ̄ πυ ̣[ήσ ]ι, ";since Erasus is going to celebrate the festival of Harpocrates so soon on the 14th"; (Edd.).
The case against giving ποιέω a sacrificial sense in the NT (Luke 22:19, 1 Corinthians 11:24) is stated at length by T. K. Abbott Essays chiefly on the Original Texts of the Old and New Testaments, p. 110 ff., see contra F. W. Mozley Exp VI. vii. p. 370 ff.
We may add a few miscellaneous exx.—PSI VI. 552.19 (iii/B.C.) ἐὰν μ ̣ὲν ποιῶσιν ἡδέ ̣ω ̣ς αὐτά, βέλτιστα, P Oxy II. 260.8 (A.D. 59) ἐξ ἧς ἐποιησάμε [θα ] πρὸ [ς ] ἑαυτ ̣ο ̣υ <ς > ἐπὶ τοῦ στρατηγοῦ, ";in consequence of our confronting each other before the strategus"; (Edd.), BGU I. 163.7 (A.D. 108) φασὶ οἱ παρόντες ἐκεῖνον μᾶλλον τοῦτο πεποιηκέναι (for perf. cf. 2 Corinthians 11:25), καὶ γὰρ ἄλλοι ὡς πληγέντες ὑπὸ αὐτοῦ ἀναφόριον δεδώκασι, P Tebt II. 315.28 (ii/A.D.) where the writer promises to help in getting a friend’s books through the scrutiny by the government inspector, πρὶν γὰρ [α ]ὐ ̣τὸ [ν ] π [ρό ]ς σε ἐλθῖν ἐλθῖν ἐγὼ αὐτὸν ποι [ήσ ]ω ἐκπλέξαι σε, ";for I will make him let you through before he comes to you"; (Edd.), and ib. 407.21 (A.D. 199 ?) where an ex-high-priest warns his wife and daughter that if they do not fall in with his wishes he will leave certain property to the temple—πά ]ν ̣τα ὅ [σα ] ἐποίησα ἐπ᾽ ὀνόματός σου εἶναι τοῦ [ἐν Ἀλεξανδρείᾳ θεοῦ ] μεγ [ά ]λου Σαράπιδος, ";all that I placed in your name is the property of the great Serapis at Alexandria."; In records of manumission, it is frequently stated that an enfranchised slave is free ποιεῖν ὅ κα θέλῃ, ";to do whatever he wills"; : see Deissmann (LAE p. 328 f.), who compares Galatians 5:17.
For the forms ποῖσαι Luke 11:42 א, ποίσας John 5:11 W, see Moulton Gr. ii. p. 73, and cf. Archiv iv. p. 492. Πεποιήκεισαν, as in Mark 15:7, is found in Magn 93 (b).24 (a Senate decree—c. B.C. 190).
