זָרַק to scatter (a kindred root to זָרָה, זָרַע)
(a) dry things, such as dust, Job 2:12; 2 Chronicles 34:4 cinders, Exodus 9:8, 10 live coals, Ezekiel 10:2.
(b) more often liquid things (to sprinkle, fprengen), such as water, Numbers 19:13 blood, Exodus 24:6, 29:16, 20 Exodus 29:20; Leviticus 1:5, 11 3:2, and often besides. Followed by עַל to sprinkle upon, Exod. loc. cit. Intrans. Hosea 7:9, שֵׂיבָה זָרְֽקָה בוֹ גַּם “grey hairs also are scattered upon him.” Compare the Lat. spargere, in the same sense, Prop. iii. 4, 24, and Arab. ذرأ to scatter, Med. E. to be grey on the front of the head (prop. to be sprinkled over with grey hairs, to begin to be grey).
