אָזַן a root not used in Kal. Properly by a conjecture sufficiently probable of Jo. Simonis, to be sharp, acute, pointed, whence אֹזֶן ear (which may indeed, especially as to animals, be so called from the pointed form), and אָזֵן, אֲזֵנִים (sharp) weapons. (Compare ἀκοή, ἀκούω, and ἀκή, acies, acuo.) A cognate root apparently is עָצַן, which see.
Hiphil הֶאֱזִין (as if Ohren machen, to make ears) to prick up the ears; die Ohren fpi&0000;en, ἐνωτίζεσθαι (Arab. أَذَنَ id.), hence to listen. Construed, followed by an accus., Genesis 4:23; Job 33:1 לְ Job 34:2 אֶל Psalms 77:2 עַל Proverbs 17:4 עַד Numbers 23:18, of person and thing. Specially, to hear and answer, used of God, Psalms 5:2, 17:1 39:13 54:4 Job 9:16 to obey, to hear and obey, used of men, followed by a dat. Nehemiah 9:30; Exodus 15:26.-Fut. 1 pers. אָזִין for אַאֲזִין Job 32:11 Part. מֵזִין for מֶאֱזִין Proverbs 17:4.
II. אָזַן Arab. وَزَنَ to weigh, whence מֹאזְנַיִם scales. It only occurs in
Piel אִזֵּן to weigh, to ponder, Ecclesiastes 12:9. Followed by the syn. חִקֵּר. Rabbin. אֻזַּן to be weighed, proved.
