עוּד

(1) i.q. Arab. عَادَ Med. Waw, to turn back, to return (the verbs אוּד No. 1, and תוּד see Piel, are nearly connected); then to repeat, to do over again (compare שׁוּב); whence inf. absol. עוֹד adv. again, yet (which see).

(2) to say again and again, to witness, to exhort, in Kal once, Lamentations 2:13 כתיב, see Hiphil.

Piel עִוֵּד to surround, Psalms 119:61. (Eth. ዐዊድ፡ to go round, አዖ፡ to make go round, i.e. to surround.)

Hiphil הִעֵיד.

(1) causat. to take as a witness, to call any one to witness, Isaiah 8:2; Jeremiah 32:10, 25 Jeremiah 32:25, 44 Jeremiah 32:44 hence to call as witness, to invoke, followed by בְּ against any one, Deuteronomy 4:26, 30:19 31:28.

(2) i.q. Kal; hence to testify, to bear witness, absol. Amos 3:13; Malachi 2:14, followed by an acc. against any one, 1 Kings 21:10, 13 1 Kings 21:13, and in a good sense for any one, i.e, to praise him, Job 29:11 (compare μαρτυρέω, Luke 4:22). Hence

(a) to obtest, i.e. to affirm solemnly, to affirm, calling God to witness, followed by בְּ of pers. Genesis 43:3, הָעֵד הֵעִד בָּנוּ הָאִישׁ לֵּאמֹר “the man did solemnly affirm unto us;” Deuteronomy 8:19, 32:46 1 Kings 2:42; Zechariah 3:6.

(b) to admonish solemnly, especially Jehovah a people, followed by an acc. of pers. Lamentations 2:13 בְּ Psalms 50:7, 81:9 2 Kings 17:13 עַלּ Jeremiah 6:10 especially to chastise, to chide (compare יָסַר), Nehemiah 13:15, 21 Nehemiah 13:21.

(c) solemnly to enjoin on any one a precept or law; hence used of any law given by God (see עֵדָה No. 3, and עֵדוּת ), 2 Kings 17:15, אֵת עֵדוֹתָיו אֲשֶׁר הֵעִיד בָּם “his precepts, which he had given them;” Nehemiah 9:34; 1 Samuel 8:9.

Hophal הוּעֵד to be declared, shewn, Exodus 21:29.
