Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שֵׁד only in plur. שֵׁדִים idols, pr. lords (compare בְּעָלִים), Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalms 106:27 from the root שׁוּד to rule; whence سَأيِدُ, سَيِّدُ lord, master; Syriac ܫܙܺܕܐܳ demon. LXX., Vulg., δαιμόνια, dœmonia; since the Jews [rightly] regarded idols to be demons, who allowed themselves to be worshipped by men.
