ἱκετήριος, ἱκετηρία, ἱκετηριον (ἱκέτης a suppliant), pertaining to a suppliant, fit for a suppliant; ἱκετηρία, as a substantive, namely, ἐλαία or ῤάβδος;

1. an olive-branch; for suppliants approached the one whose aid they would implore holding an olive-branch entwined with white wool and fillets, to signify that they came as suppliants (cf. Trench, § 51, under the end): λαμβάνειν ἱκετηριαν, Herodotus 5, 51; ἱκετηριαν τιθέναι or προβάλλεσθαι παρά τίνι, etc.

2. equivalent to ἱκεσία, supplication (Isocrates, p. 186 d. vat.; Polybius; 2 Macc. 9:18): plural joined with δεήσεις (Polybius 3, 112, 8; singular Job 40:22, the Sept.), Hebrews 5:7.

of a suppliant; as subst., ἡ ἱ . (Sc. ῥάβδος ),

1. in cl., an olive-branch, carried by a suppliant.

2. In late Gk. = ἱκεσία , supplication: pl., δεήσεις κ . ., Hebrews 5:7.

A.D. 266) ὑπὲρ θυγατρὸς ὀρφανῆς καὶ καταδεοῦς τὴν ἡλικίαν, δέσποτα ἡγεμών, ἱκετηρίαν τιθεμένη ἐπὶ τὸ σὸν μέγεθος καταφεύγω, ";on behalf of my orphan daughter who is under age, my lord praefect, I make this supplication and take refuge in your power"; (Edd.), P Oxy I. 71i. 3 (A.D. 303) τὴν ἱκ [ετ ]ηρίαν προσάγω εὔελπις ὢν τῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ σοῦ μεγέθους δικαιοκρισίας τυχεῖν, ";I make my petition to you with full confidence that I shall obtain justice from your highness"; (Edd.), Syll 666.3 (ii/B.C.) ὑπὲρ ὧν ὁ ἱερεὺς τῆς Ἴσιος ἔθετο τὴν ἱκετηρίαν ἐν τῆι βουλῆι κτλ. For a similar use of ἱκετεία (cf. Sirach 32:14 al.) cf.
