Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בָּקַע fut. יִבְקַע inf. with suffix בִּקְעָם

(1)  to cleave asunder, to divide. (Closely allied to פָּקַע and Syr. ܦܘܰܥ. The signification of cleaving and opening, as proceeding from striking (see אָבַק בָּכָה ), is also found as inherent in the syllable בק, פק in the kindred roots פָּקַח, בָּקַר, בָּכַר). Specially to cleave wood, Ecclesiastes 10:9 the sea (used of God), Exodus 14:16 to rip up women with child, Amos 1:13 to wound on the shoulder, Ezekiel 29:7. To rend a city, or to open to oneself, is said of him who takes it by storm; 2 Chronicles 32:1, וַיּאֹמֶר לְבִקְעָם אֵלָיו “and he thought to take those cities by storm;” 21:17. [“Followed by בְּ to cleave into or through any thing, to break through, 2 Samuel 23:16; 1 Chronicles 11:8.”]

(2) to cleave and open any thing shut, so that what is shut in may be liberated and break forth; Isaiah 48:21, “he clave the rock, the waters gushed out;” Judges 15:19. Hence it is construed even with an acc. of that which comes forth, Psalms 74:15, בָּקַעְתָּ מַעְיָן וָנַחַל “thou hast made fountains of streams to burst forth.” Compare Niphal, Piel No. 3 and Gr. ῥήγνυσι δάκρυα, πηγάς, to emit tears, fountains.

(3) a bird is said to cleave eggs, when by sitting upon them she hatches the young. Isaiah 34:15. Followed by בְּ to cleave into or through any thing, 2 Samuel 23:16; 1 Chronicles 11:18.

Niphal

(1) passive of Kal No. 1, to be cleft asunder, to cleave and open itself, as the earth, Numbers 16:31; Zechariah 14:4 also to be cleft, rent, Job 26:8, 32:19 2 Chronicles 25:12 to be taken by storm as a city, 2 Kings 25:4; Jeremiah 52:7.

(2) passive of Kal No. 2, to be opened, used of fountains, Genesis 7:11. But it is also applied to water breaking forth, Isaiah 35:6; Proverbs 3:20 to light, Isaiah 58:8. Comp. syn. פָּטַר, בַּקַר, בָּכַר, in which the sense of rending is also applied to the thing which breaks forth.

(3) pass. of Kal No. 3, to be hatched, to come out of the egg; used of a young viper, Isaiah 59:5.

(4) As things which are violently shaken together are cleft and broken asunder, it is hyperbolically used of the earth as struck and shaken, 1 Kings 1:40.

Piel בִּקֵּעַ fut. יְבַקַּע

(1) i.q. Kal No. 1, to cleave, as wood, Genesis 22:3 a rock, Psalms 78:15 to rip up women with child, 2 Kings 8:12, 15:16.

(2) to rend, to tear in pieces, like wild beasts, i.q. טָרַף. Hosea 13:8; 2 Kings 2:24.

(3) i.q. Kal No. 2, to open, to cause to break forth streams from a rock, Job 28:10 streams, Habakkuk 3:9 wind, Ezekiel 13:11, 13 Ezekiel 13:13.

(4) i.q. Kal No. 3, to sit upon eggs, and hatch the young, Isaiah 59:5.

Pual בֻּקַּע to be cleft, rent, Joshua 9:4 to be ripped up, Hosea 14:1 i.q. Niphal, to be taken by storm, as a city, Ezekiel 26:10.

Hiphil

(1) i.q. Kal No. 1, to open a city, i.e. to take it by storm, Isaiah 7:6.

(2) Followed by אֶל to break through to any one, compare Kal No. 4, 2 Kings 3:26.

Hophal הָבְקַע pass. of Hiphil No. 1, Jeremiah 39:2.

Hithpael, to be rent, cleft, Joshua 9:13; Micah 1:4.
