Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

כָּרָה to dig (Ch. כְּרָא and Arab. كرا to dig the earth. Kindred roots are כּוּר No. 1, אָכַר, also קוּר and נָקַר); e.g. to dig a well, Genesis 26:25 a pit, 50:4. Hence

(a) it is figuratively applied to plots, Psalms 7:16, 57:7 119:85 Proverbs 16:27, אִישׁ בְּלִיַּעַל כֹּרֶה רָעָה “the wicked man prepares mischief.” Followed by עַל of pers. and without any word signifying ditch or pit, Job 6:27, תִּכְרוּ עַל־רֵיעֲכֶם “ye dig (pits) for your friend,” similarly in the much discussed passage, 40:30, יִכְרוּ עָלָיו חַבָּרִים “do the companions (i.e. the company of fishermen) lay snares for him (the crocodile)? do they divide him (when taken) amongst the merchants?”

(b) Psalms 40:7, אָזְנַיִם כָּרִיתָ לִּי “ears hast thou digged for me,” a poetical and also a stronger and bolder expression for the common אֹזֶן גָּלִיתָ לִי “thou hast opened the ear for me,” i.e. thou hast revealed (this) to me. [But does not this refer to the law in Exo 21:1-36, relative to the servant whose ear had been bored, and who was thus made a servant for ever?] To this answer the German phrases jemandem den Staar ftechen, i.e. to sharpen any one’s sight, to shew what he ought to see, but which, as if blind, he had not seen; jem. die Zunge löfen.

[“Niphal pass. of Kal, Psalms 94:13.”]

Derived nouns, כֵּרָה No. 1, מִכְרֶה.

II. כָּרָה

(1) to buy, i.q. מָכַר, קָנָה. Deuteronomy 2:6; Hosea 3:2. (Arab. كرَا I., III., to place, VI., VIII., X., to hire.)

(2) to make a feast, 2 Kings 6:23. (Arab. وكر to make a feast, especially on the completion of a building, also قرى to entertain as a guest, قِرًا entertainment. How these ideas are to be connected with that of buying I do not define. Perhaps costly banquets are intended, for which one’s own stores would not suffice, and thus the provision was bought elsewhere, zu denen man einkaufen muß.)

I. כֵּרָה or כָּרָה f. pl. const. כְּרֹת, pits, cisterns, root כָּרָה No. 1 (compare Genesis 26:25). Zephaniah 2:6, נְוֹת כְּרֹת רֹעִים וְגִדְרוֹת צאֹן “fields full of shepherds’ cisterns and folds for flocks.” In the word כְּרֹת allusion is made to כְּרֵתִים, verse Zephaniah 2:5.

II. כֵּרָה f. feasts, banquets, from the root כָּרָה No. II. (2). 2 Kings 6:23.
