They appeared in glory and were discussing Jesus'his">[fn] departure which he was about to bring to fulfillment in Jerusalem.

Now Peter and the men with him had been overcome by sleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus'his">[fn] glory and the two men standing with him.Daniel 8:18; 10:9;">[xr]

Just as Moses and ElijahJust as they">[fn] were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it's good that we're here! Let's set up three shelterstents">[fn] - one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." (PeterHe">[fn] didn't know what he was saying.)

But while he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them, and they were frightened as they went into the cloud.

After the voice had spoken, Jesus waswas found to be">[fn] alone. The disciplesThey">[fn] kept silent and at that timein those days">[fn] told no one about what they had seen.Matthew 17:9;">[xr]

But they didn't know what this meant. Indeed, the meaning was hidden from them so that they didn't understand it; and they were afraid to ask him about this statement.Mark 9:32; Luke 2:50; 18:34;">[xr]

When his disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them, as Elijah did?as Elijah did">[fn]2 Kings 1:10,12;">[xr]

Stay with the same family, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the worker deserves his pay. Don't move from house to house.Matthew 10:10-11; 1 Corinthians 9:4; 10:27; 1 Timothy 5:18;">[xr]

"Whenever you go into a town and the peoplethey">[fn] welcome you, eat whatever they serve you,

"How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.Ezekiel 3:6; Matthew 11:21;">[xr]

After careful consideration, Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of bandits. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.

Since he knew what they were thinking, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is devastated, and a divided household collapses.and house falls on house">[fn]Matthew 12:25; Mark 3:24; John 2:25;">[xr]

And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own followerssons">[fn] drive them out? That is why they will be your judges!

Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and settle there. And so the final condition of that person is worse than the first."John 5:14; Hebrews 6:4; 10:26; 2 Peter 2:20;">[xr]

The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah. But look, something greater than Jonah is here!"Jonah 3:5;">[xr]

So you are witnesses and approve of the deeds of your ancestors, because they killed those for whom you are building monuments.

That is why the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles. They will kill some of them and persecute others,'[fn]Matthew 23:34;">[xr]

Be like people who are waiting for their master to return from a wedding. As soon as he comes and knocks, they will open the door for him.

How blessed they will be if he comes in the middle of the night or near dawnin the second or the third watch">[fn] and finds them awake!finds them so">[fn]
