But when the farmers saw him, they talked it over among themselves and said, 'This is the heir. Let's kill him so that the inheritance will be ours!'

So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

When the scribes and the high priests realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to lay their hands on him at that very hour, but they were afraid of the crowd.

So they watched him closely and sent spies who pretended to be honest men in order to trap him in what he would say. They wanted to hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.Matthew 22:15;">[xr]

So they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you are right in what you say and teach, and that you don't favor any individual, but teach the way of God truthfully.Matthew 22:16; Mark 12:14;">[xr]

"Show me a denarius. Whose face and name does it have?"They said, "Caesar's."

Nor can they die anymore, for they are like the angels and, since they share in the resurrection, are God's children.Romans 8:23; 1 Corinthians 15:42,49, 52; 1 John 3:2;">[xr]

"Beware of the scribes! They like to walk around in long robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.Matthew 23:5; Luke 11:43;">[xr]

They devour widows' houses[fn] and say long prayers to cover it up. They will receive greater condemnation!"Matthew 23:14;">[xr]

Then they asked him, "Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign that these things are about to take place?"

"But before all these things take place, peoplethey">[fn] will arrest you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake.Mark 13:9; Acts 4:3; 5:18; 12:4; 16:24; 25:23; 1 Peter 2:13; Revelation 2:10;">[xr]

"You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death.Micah 7:6; Mark 13:12; Acts 7:59; 12:2;">[xr]

They will fall by the edge of the sword and be carried off as captives among all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled."Daniel 9:27; 12:7; Romans 11:25;">[xr]

Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud'Daniel 7:13">[fn] with power and great glory.Matthew 24:30; Revelation 1:7; 14:14;">[xr]

As soon as they produce leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.

So the high priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, for they were afraid of the crowd.Psalm 2:2; John 11:47; Acts 4:27;">[xr]

They were delighted and agreed to give him money.Zechariah 11:12;">[xr]

So they went and found everything just as Jesushe">[fn] had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

Then they arrested him, led him away, and brought him to the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance.Matthew 26:57-58; John 18:15;">[xr]

When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had taken their seats, Peter, too, sat down among them.Matthew 26:69; Mark 14:66; John 18:17-18;">[xr]
