For the choir director: A psalm of David. O God, whom I praise, don't stand silent and aloof

They surround me with hateful words and fight against me for no reason.

I love them, but they try to destroy me with accusations even as I am praying for them!

They repay evil for good, and hatred for my love.

When his case comes up for judgment, let him be pronounced guilty. Count his prayers as sins.

For he refused all kindness to others; he persecuted the poor and needy, and he hounded the brokenhearted to death.

May those curses become the Lord 's punishment for my accusers who speak evil of me.

But deal well with me, O Sovereign Lord , for the sake of your own reputation! Rescue me because you are so faithful and good.

For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of pain.

For he stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them.

He has paid a full ransom for his people. He has guaranteed his covenant with them forever. What a holy, awe-inspiring name he has!

Light shines in the darkness for the godly. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous.

They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them.

For the Lord is high above the nations; his glory is higher than the heavens.

Not to us, O Lord , not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.

The dead cannot sing praises to the Lord , for they have gone into the silence of the grave.

I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy.

Let my soul be at rest again, for the Lord has been good to me.

What can I offer the Lord for all he has done for me?

I will lift up the cup of salvation and praise the Lord 's name for saving me.
