When the centurionhe">[fn] heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him to ask him to come and save his servant's life.

Soon afterwards, Jesushe">[fn] went to a city called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were going along with him.

As he approached the entrance to the city, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her.

The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesushe">[fn] gave him back to his mother.

Fear gripped everyone, and they began to praise God, saying, "A great prophet has appeared among us," and "God has helped his people."Luke 1:65,68; 24:19; John 4:19; 6:14; 9:17;">[xr]

John's disciples told him about all these things. So John called two of his disciplesMatthew 11:2;">[xr]

Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesushim">[fn] to eat with him. So he went to the Pharisee's home and took his place at the table.Matthew 26:6; Mark 14:3; John 11:2;">[xr]

and knelt at his feet behind him. She was crying and began to wash his feet with her tears and dry them with her hair.the hair of her head">[fn] Then she kissed his feet over and over again, anointing them constantly with the perfume.

"A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some seeds fell along the path, were trampled on, and the birds of the sky ate them up.

Then his disciples began to ask him what this parable meant.Matthew 13:10; Mark 4:10;">[xr]

His mother and his brothers came to him, but they couldn't get near him because of the crowd.Matthew 12:46; Mark 3:31;">[xr]

One day Jesushe">[fn] and his disciples got into a boat. He said to them, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." So they started out.Matthew 8:23; Mark 4:35;">[xr]

So the peoplethey">[fn] went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind, they were frightened.

Just then a synagogue leader by the name of Jairus arrived. He fell at Jesus' feet and kept begging him to come to his home,Matthew 9:18; Mark 5:22;">[xr]

because his only daughter, who was about twelve years old, was dying. While Jesushe">[fn] was on his way, the crowds continued to press in on him.

She came up behind Jesushim">[fn] and touched the tassel of his garment, and her bleeding stopped at once.

Now there were about 5,000 men. So he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty."

Then he said to all of them, "If anyone wants to come with me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross every day, and follow me continually.Matthew 10:38; 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 14:27;">[xr]

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and the glory ofand that of">[fn] the Father and the holy angels.Matthew 10:33; Mark 8:38; 2 Timothy 2:12;">[xr]
