Another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am just going to examine them; I beg you, excuse me for being called away.

And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired workers are now in my father''s house, who have plenty of bread, and I am here perishing with hunger!

And I am no longer worthy to be called your son; just make me like one of your hired workers.

And his son said to him, My father, I have sinned before heaven and before you, and I am not worthy to be called your son.

Then the steward said to himself, What will I do? for my lord will take away from me the stewardship? I cannot dig, and I am ashamed to beg.

And he called in a loud voice and said, O my father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and wet my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

And he would not for a long time; but afterwards he said within himself, Though I am not afraid of God, and have no regard for men;

And the Pharisee stood by himself, and prayed thus: O God, I thank thee, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, grafters, adulterers, and not like this publican.

But the publican stood afar off, and he would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote his breast, saying, O God, be merciful to me, I am a sinner.

He said to him, I will judge you from your own mouth, O wicked servant. You knew me that I am a harsh man, and pick up what I have not laid down, and reap what I have not sown.

He said to them, Be careful that you may not be deceived; for many will come in my name, and say, I am the Christ; and the time is near; but do not follow them.

For who is greater, he who sits down or he who serves? Is it not he who sits down? but I am among you as one who serves.

Simon said to him, My Lord, I am ready with you, even for the prison and for death.

And after a little while, another saw him, and said to him, You also are one of them. But Peter said, I am not.

And they all said, Are you then the Son of God? Jesus said to them, You say that I am.

And he confessed and did not deny it; but he declared, I am not the Christ.

Then they asked him again, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you a prophet? And he said, No.

He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Straighten the highway of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.

This is the one who comes after me, and is ahead of me, the one even the strings of whose shoes I am not good enough to untie.

You yourselves bear me witness that I said, I am not the Christ, but only a messenger to go before him.
