Bear in mind today that I am not speaking to your children who have not personally experienced the judgments of the Lord your God, which revealed his greatness, strength, and power.

Teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.

You must not eat it so that it may go well with you and your children after you; you will be doing what is right in the Lord 's sight.

Pay careful attention to all these things I am commanding you so that it may always go well with you and your children after you when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

You are children of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave your forehead bald for the sake of the dead.

However, the women, little children, cattle, and anything else in the city—all its plunder—you may take for yourselves as spoil. You may take from your enemies the plunder that the Lord your God has given you.

Gather the people—men, women, and children, as well as the resident foreigners in your villages—so they may hear and thus learn about and fear the Lord your God and carefully obey all the words of this law.

Then their children, who have not known this law, will also hear about and learn to fear the Lord your God for as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess."

His people have been unfaithful to him; they have not acted like his children—this is their sin. They are a perverse and deceitful generation.
