a Congregational minister, son of Rev. Elihu B. Baxter, was born at Cornwall, Vt., Aug. 8, 1809. In early life he was a carpenter, and began to preach in 1836, assisting Rev. Sherman Kellog, the evangelist. Although he had previously labored with the Congregationalists, he was ordained Sept. 25, 1842, as a Free-will Baptist minister, in Waterbury, Vt., and the following year preached in East Whitehall, N. Y. During several succeeding years he labored as an evangelist with different denominations. In 1854 he resumed his relations with the Congregational Church, and became acting-pastor in Campton, Ill., in 1855. serving until 1857. The year following he preached in Piano, Ill. From 1859 to 1862 he ministered in Burns anti Leon, Wis.; 1862 to 1864 in Biroqua and Portland; 1864 to 1868 in Mauston; 1868 to 1870 in Tomah; 1870 to 1872 in Hale; 1873 to 1877 in Mauston, where he remained without charge thereafter until his death, which occurred June 14, 1879.
