a Baptist minister, was born at Salem, Mass., Nov. 25, 1816. At the age of fourteen he removed to Boston, where he was apprenticed to the printing business. He made a profession of his faith in 1834, in 1835 commenced preparation for college, and graduated from Brown University in 1840. Soon after leaving college he went South, and was ordained at Baltimore to the work of an evangelist. The winter of 1840-41 he spent with the Baptist Church in Alexandria, D.
