was born in Edinburgh, March 8,1708. His life was devoted to literature, and his publications were very numerous. He edited the "Biographia Britannica," and was one of the writers of the "Universal History." His title to mention in this work rests on the publication of A Discourse on Providence (1748, 3d ed. 8vo); Thoughts on Moral and Religious Subjects (1749, 8vo); A. new and complete :History of the Holy Bible (1733, 2vols. folio).— General Biog.
