Chater, John (1),

an English Independent, was born in London and educated at Plasterers Hall. He became a member of Mr. Bradbury's Church at New Court, Carey Street, in 1752; was dismissed to take charge of the Church at Newport, Isle of Wight, in 1755,' and returned to London in 1758, where he settled as pastor t Silver Street.. In 1765 he adopted. the Sandemanian opinions, became a preacher among them, and commenced a bookselling business, first on Ludgate Hill, then, in 1769, at King Street, Cheapside, where he kept a circulating library. He wrote Tom Rigby, a religious novel, and a pamphlet with the title Another High-road to Bell, in which he denounced some of the pulpit entertainments of that time (1767).
