a Portuguese missionary of the Jesuit order, was born at Oporto in 1531. He preached the Gospel upon the coast of Malabar for eighteen years and went to Japan in 1571, where he became noted for the zeal with which he labored for the conversion of the idolaters. In 1581 he became vice- provincial of the mission, and died at Conzuca, in Japan, May 7, 1590. His letters have been published in the Relations d'Japon (1575, 1582, 1588).See Biog.
