(or Heardred), bishop of Hexham, consecrated October 29, 797, died in 800. Eadric, second abbot of St. Albans, A.D. 796. Eadsige, archbishop of Canterbury, of whose parentage and birthplace nothing seems to be known. The earliest mention of him presents him as one of the chaplains of Canute; he was then a secular, and, of course, in priest's orders. He was consecrated bishop of St. Martin's in 1035; was translated to the see of Canterbury in 1038, and repaired to Rome for the pallium. On his return home, In 1043, he was called upon to officiate at the coronation of Edward the Confessor-the memorable event of his life. He died in 1050.
