Jowett, William
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a Church of England divine, was born in 1789. He graduated at St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1810, and was the first clergyman of the Church of England who volunteered, in 1813, for the foreign service of the Church Missionary Society. His field of labor was in the countries in the Mediterranean. and the fruits of his observations were, Christian Researches in the Mediterranean from 1815 to 1820, and; Christian Researches in Syria and the Holy Land in 1823 and 1824. He was also the author of, Time and, Temper: a Manual of Selections from Holy Scripture, with Thoughts on Education (4th ed. 1852): — Helps to Pastoral Visitations (2d ed. 1848, 3 parts). From 1832 to 1840 he acted as clerical secretary to the Church Missionary Society; for many years held the Sunday evening lectureship of St. Mary's, Aldermanbury; and, in 1851 succeeded the Reverend R. Bickersteth as St. John's chaplain. He died at Clapharn, Surrey, February 20, 1855. See Hardwicke, Annual Biography, 1856, page 208.
