an Irish clergyman and collegian, was born at Douglas, County Cork, Ireland, in 1787. He graduated from Trinity College in 1805, and became a fellow in 1808. He studied law at first, was called to the Irish bar, then took holy orders; in 1816 was elected professor of oratory by competitive examination: became senior fellow in 1836; bursar for many years, and in 1852 was appointed provost, which office he held till his death, January 24, 1867. Dr. McDonnell's administration of fifteen years was marked by improvements in the undergraduate course, and by a great advance in the status of the college.
