a Swedish theologian, was born September 27, 1757, at Malmno. He studied at Lund, and at the age of twenty-three was ordained. In 1786 he was called to Lund, where he spent the remainder of his life. Schartau, who died February 2, 1825, was a very eminent preacher and a faithful witness of Jesus. He lifted up his voice, calling to repentance all who were permeated by the leaven of unbelief, which characterized the age. After his death a number of homiletical and ascetical works were published . His followers are known as Schartauans. See Lindeblad, Schartau's Life and Teaching (Lund, 1837; Germ. transl. by A.
