an Episcopal clergyman, was born near Fort Hamilton, L.I., Aug 29, 1795. He was trained for college at the Flatbush Academy; and, graduating from Columbia College, New York, in 1813, he pursued his theological studies under bishop Hobart, from whom he received deacon's orders in 1816 and priest's orders in 1819. In April 1817, he was appointed by Dr. Brown his assistant in Grace Church, and in the same year accepted the rectorship of St. Ann's Church, Brooklyn. In 1819 he became rector of the Episcopal Church in Augusta, Ga. Resigning this charge in 1831, he returned to the North, and was called to the rectorship of Christ Church, Hartford, Conn., where he remained till 1833, when he became missionary of the Church of the Holy Evangelist in New York. St. Peter's Church, his last parish, was offered to him in 1836; and in the same year he became professor of Pastoral Theology and Pulpit Eloquence in the General Theological Seminary, New York.. He died in the St. Peter's rectory, March 25 1849. Dr. Smith published, The Heart Delineated in its State of Nature, and as Renewed by Grace (1834, 12mo): also Sermons (1827, 1835).
