an Episcopal minister, was born at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1740. He graduated at the College of Philadelphia, was ordained in 1770, and appointed to the mission at Fort Hunter. He prepared a Mohawk translation of the gospel of Mark, an Exposition of the Church Catechism, and a compendious History of the Bible. During the revolutionary war he became an object of suspicion, and was subjected to many hardships. At length he removed to Canada, and in 1786 opened an academy at Kingston. About 1799 he was appointed chaplain to the garrison. He died at Kingston in August 1811. He has been called the "Father of the Upper Canada Church."
