Tucker (or Tooker), William, D.D.

a learned English divine of the 16th century, was born at Exeter. He was educated at New College, Oxford and was admitted perpetual fellow in 1577. In 1585 he was promoted to the archdeaconry of Barnstable, in Devonshire. He was eventually made chaplain to queen Elizabeth. Dr. Tucker afterwards became prebendary of Salisbury, and took his degree of D.D. in 1594. He was made canon of the church at Exeter, and was installed dean of Lichfield, Feb. 21, 1604. He died at Salisbury, March 19, 1620. Dr. Tucker was esteemed an excellent Greek and Latin scholar. He was an able divine, a person of great gravity and piety, and well read in curious and critical authors. His publications are, Charisma, sive Ribilium Sanitatum Gratia, etc. (Lond. 1597, 4to), a historical defense of the power of royalty to cure the king's evil: Q f the Fabric of the Church and Churchmen's Living (ibid. 1604, 8vo): Singulare (Certamen cum Martino Becano Jesuita (ibid. 1611, 8vo), written in defence of James I against Becan and Bellarmine.
